PGTAG
Prince George's County Association for Talented and Gifted Education
Advocacy

There are three levels of advocacy in which you can participate:

Advocacy at your Child's School
Advocacy at Prince George's County
Advocacy at the State and Federal Level

The updated PGCPS TAG Procedures are available as of 8/27/09.  Please
also see the
attachments - scroll down to Procedure 6142.2.

This set of procedures documents how TAG services should be provided,
from identification to program models (Pullout, TRC and Centers) to teacher
selection to the responsibilities of PGCPS staff.  It focuses more on
elementary and middle school than high school but it contains high school
information as well.  This document is not an attempt to change the current
approved programs but it is the first time they have been officially
documented.  Educators at all PGCPS schools can use these procedures to
ensure that they are meeting the needs of their gifted students.

It is well known that some schools are much closer than others to
implementing the TAG program as documented here.  If your school has
some changes to be made, please don't hesitate to bring this document to
your principal or TAG Coordinator's attention.  Please, however, keep in
mind that the more change that is needed at your school, the longer it will
take.  Teacher training, offered by the TAG Office, occurs throughout the
year.  Support from the TAG Office is available but they are woefully
understaffed and that isn't going to change in this economy.  Many educators
will be seeing the whole picture for the first time.  If there are a lot of
changes to be made, I would recommend asking for a school based
committee with educator and parent stakeholders to set priorities, goals and
objectives.  Progress should be seen throughout the year and into the next.
It is not reasonable to expect a lot of improvements in the first month of
school.  It is reasonable to expect the school to start working towards
implementing the program as documented here.

Please note that sibling placement is not addressed in this document because
it's a lottery issue.

Our hope is that this is a tool that will be used to ensure that all gifted
students in Prince George's County receive appropriate educational services
regardless of where they attend school.  I want to thank the TAG Office for
the bulk of the documentation, the TAG Advisory Committee for their inputs
during the lengthy review process and the support of the PGCPS
Administrative staff without which this would still be just ink on paper.
